One of the old Kelvin K2 Powered compressors in the machine room at Ardnamurchan Lighthouse. I gave the handle a good swing, wee splash o petrol and a bit of diesel I could have had her running and the old horn going again!
According to Angus Martin it was a 7-9 petrol/paraffin Kelvin Homeward.
I've a couple of old issues of classic boat magazine, they ran a 2 part feature on kelvin, their cars, launches and engines
They have it that the first engine they put in any boat was in 1906 into a 23' gig - which they called Kelvin and the first fishing baot they powered was the Lch Fynne Skiff 'Brothers' CN97 a 2 cylinder, 7hp poppet valve engine at a cost of 50 quid plus 20 for fitting!
I'll scan the articles in if anyone is interested (got some copies with interesting stuff on Zulu and Fifie development as well)

my good wife was just delighted when i took her to visit those engines at ardnamurchan when we were on holiday.
Was it not a K2 that was in the boat that ran to the Craig from Girvan?
wondering what fuel consumption was like, how many gallons per hour to rated hp?
one for you engineering buffs

according to http://www.sky-net.o.../des/index.html
looks like about a gallon per hour per cylinder
suspect it would be a good bit more under a heavy load

They could certainly drink it when they were under load Mark. Can mind putting 450 gallons through the old man's 88 for 4 days and a Friday morning tow in Ganavan. We never burned that with a 330 Cummins in later years.Aye,the old Kelvin could tow the arse off a Gardner nae bother, but it came at a price..good job fuel then was cheap as chips!
