Red Empress with the timber barge
What's the story with the timber barge?
The barges have been in use on the west coast for a good while since : at least since Glenlight Shipping were about (closed early 1990s) They are used to lift timber out of areas with no harbours were the coasters cant go ( or where CALMAC deliberately reconstructed the piers to make it impossible for coasters to get alongside! i.e. Brodick) The tugs run them on the shore and either Hiab the logs onto them or in some cases drive the trailers straight on by ramp the logs are taken to Troon for unloading for the woodyard and the paper mill.
Thanks for the info sorcha.
