    "RIVAL" - 23' Fifie

    Charles Crossan Telephone: 01478 612252
    23' x 9' Sailing Fifie
Type of build: Clinker larch on oak
    Year of build: 1921
    Builder: Cadger of Gardenstown

'RIVAL' is the smaller sister of the famous sailing Fifie, 'WHITE WING' (also built by Cadger of Gardenstown and currently owned by the Fisheries Museum at Anstruther). "RIVAL" with her sweet lines still maintains the impression of strength and excellent sea keeping qualities.

Her original registration from build was Fraserborough (FR, numerals unknown). As far as I am aware, she fished out of Gardenstown in her early days and was family owned. She was then sold on to an owner in the Western Isles (Scalpay, Harris) and subsequently her registration changed to SY 274. I have owned "RIVAL" on two occasions, first being in 1989.

Her original sail plan was a large dipping lug with a foresail on a withdrawable bowsprit. Since her original build and up until recently, "RIVAL" has been powered with a diesel engine. My intentions were to restore "RIVAL" to her original form and sail plan with secondary diesel power.

Present financial constraints have made the above restorations impossible for me to continue and regrettably I find myself in a position that I have to sell her to an interested party who will continue the restoration work. It would be a crime for this particular vessel to become a total loss.

At present "RIVAL" is stored by Ullapool Boatbuilders. She has already been fitted with a new greenheart keel and has had most of her aged larch planking replaced. She awaits further restoration work and the completion of her fitting out.

She is unique. "RIVAL" is the last of her type of vessel size and construction, i.e. clinker. Fifies were the most common type of vessel along the entire east coast of the Scottish mainland in the early 19th C. It is my sincere wish that her beauty and importance be recognized and she be preserved and restored as a working exhibit in recognition of Scotland's Maritime History and for the benefit of future generations.
Can't believe she is still sitting there lol....took her piccy myself a year last April...few more weeds around her now....I was told she was there as someone's project...can't remember who told me...shame to see her there like that but at least she not firewood...yet !

Assuming she was always called the Rival, there was a Rival, FR 18, owner Alex Tait of Fraserburgh, 3 tons, in 1939.
This boat was owned by my father which i am quite sure he bought in the early 80's (from scalpay) and started to restore (his cousin a ships carpenter doing the work) over a period of 5 or 6 years, i was very young when she was put back to use but i still remember being out on her many times. He then sold the rival (then painted green) to the late charles crossan who had her in uist after which i think she ended up down at a boat yard near oban, where she was for a number of years before being bought ( i think by charles again to be taken to ullapool boat builders) in 2004 with the intention to restore her which sadly has come to no avail. the rival lay in the pictured yard for i think three years owed by a man in the isle of wight (not to sure about this though) who had a replica under construction nearby which i seen almost fully planked (about two years ago). I have got a bad feeling that the rival has ended up on the bonfire at ullapool as there had not been a bonfire for a few years then the when one was put on she disappeared the same week which if she has gone up in smoke is a great shame as this boat has alot of memories not only for myself but also for all of my brothers, parents, cousins etc i will try and scan some photo's of her back when my dad had her to show what she should look like now!
