Dunara Castle leaving St Kilda

Dunara Castle leaving St Kilda

This year marks the 80th Anniversary of the evacuation of St Kilda (1930). With that in mind, and having learnt much from my visit, I have painted this scene, which plays on the idea of evacuation, though the 'Dunara Castle' would have left St Kilda on many occasions (until 1939). To the right of the picture is the snout of the island of Dun, which is very rocky, and to the left, on the horizon, is the stac of Levenish, which lies to the south-east of Village Bay. I have painted this with broad, strong strokes, to convey the energy and robust character of the iron-hulled 'Dunara' (owned by Martin Orme, built by Blackwood and Gordon in 1875, and in service until 1948). The ship is turning to port, and setting course for Leverburgh, Harris.

Good painting keep up the good work.

Thanks, Ringnetman, for your kind encouragement.  I thought it would be good to try St Kilda and the steamships - the landscape is so dramatic, but, for some reason, there has been very little artistic interest in St Kilda.  Lots of photographs but very little art work.  This was an easy painting to produce.  The painting of the bay was/is much more challenging!  I must try to paint a fishing-boat or two in these waters, with Stac Li or Boreray in the background.
Aye Donald...you've captured the wildness of that beautiful place...an era gone by...hope you got more coming, Debs ???

Thanks so much, Debra.   ??? Yes, I am trying to capture an era when St Kilda was still inhabited, and served by these remarkable ships and their crews.  I am fascinated by it all, and there will be a few more St Kilda pics, I am sure...What did Village Bay look like from the bridge of the 'Hebrides' or the 'Dunara Castle'?  Lots of questions.  Art can help us to answer these.

Final version (I think!) posted.  Wave motion on sea has been strengthened.  I allowed the 'leading wave' to run into the bow wave of the 'Dunara' to give a sense of speed and purpose.  The good ship, I imply, is perfectly at home here, and is going about her business very efficiently.
Great waves Donald !  Great to see these in their changing modes !   :idiot2:
I am enjoying the paint free zone here...it's long overdue....cold is a bit better today and horsie eating out of my hand today which is a huge improvement- and very enjoyable for me....not staying up at nights now, so question is: when do I paint now ? ha ha...Kenny says hurry up and finish the Val.... yes I am feeling guilty and should get back to it...I often wonder if any of you other artists feel the same about the effort you have to put into one...means when I am not well I just can't look at it !  I  thought a hobby was supposed to be de-stressful lol...lately it's been hell- and it's certain people on here that have made it like that- I just wish I had never posted them up at all-(I didn't to begin with if you remember) -so just one at a time, if any, from now on me thinks....I will enjoy yours instead Donald- (and the other artists)  ...keep 'em coming Donald !

Thanks so much, Debra.  You should keep 'em coming too, regardless.  Be like the 'Dunara Castle' - she just ploughed on for 73 years, and didn't bother with the wind or the waves!  I think I am particularly fond of her for that very reason - she kept going, and did her best for St Kilda and the other islands until she was 'done'.   We'll all be delighted to see other paintings by you - so don't stop, please. You're not 'done' yet!   The good thing about a gallery is that you can see another artist's style - I find that so helpful, as there are super artists on here, far better than I am.  I'm just a splasher, trying to learn from others.  This is the first time that I have done waves that look anything like the real thing - something has 'clicked' (I hope).   O0 :idiot2:
    :-[ HA HA HA
Donald you make me laugh...I think I would quite like to be the Dunara Castle if she went on for 73 years pain free ha ha...well once clear of this cold and once I am into a routine with the wee horsie (and once he is tame that will be easier- ate out of my hand today yipeeeee !!! ) ...Yes once all that sorted I will do the odd splash myself, but never again am I going to be taken for a mug....Kenny wont let that happen anyway...he's a good 'un...(I chose well there) - he keeps proving it time and again...he has taught me that there are nasty people out there...me stupid thought everyone was nice, but you get takers and givers.
I am a giver been sheltered from the takers.... and would go and hide in my burrow again but Kenny won't let me ha ha !
...I should learn from the Dunara...you just keep on going...great idea !!!
John Baird said something hillarious...a saying...but it's too rude for me to post...but he was quite right in what he said about the two faced takers !!!
(It was "Stuff 'em all Debs" in other words !)
