Double-dredge rigs hit U.S.; early buy boat gets hauled

Duckworth Steel Boats of Tarpon Springs, Fla., is building a third 165' x 40' clam boat for Dick Meyers of Eastern Shore Seafood in Mappsville, Va., which is on the ocean side of Virginia’s Eastern Shore.

Two of the boats, the E.S.S. Pride and E.S.S. Pursuit, have been completed, but the E.S.S. Pride is back on the rails at Duckworth Steel Boats getting re-rigged to pull two 150-inch, 12-ton dredges. (The 150-inches is the measurement of the cutter blade.)

The E.S.S. Pride, the first boat built for Meyers, was a single-dredge rig. The E.S.S. Pursuit was rigged for two dredges, and Duckworth Steel Boats’ operation manager, Jake Duckworth, says it is the first double-dredge clam rig in the United States. Canada has used double dredges for several years, Duckworth says.

After seeing how well the double dredge worked on the E.S.S. Pursuit, Meyers had Duckworth haul the E.S.S. Pride. The boat currently being built will also pull a pair of dredges.

Naval architect Dave Bonney, president of Bay Marine of Barrington, R.I., designed all three clammers.

Two 3508 Caterpillar diesels engines provide the propulsion power for the boats. The diesels are bolted to Twin Disc reduction gears with 6:1 ratios that turn five-bladed props.

    Pride of the fleet

Now, that’s a clam boat. Eastern Shore Seafood Products’ new 165-foot E.S.S. Pride has an all-new design, powered by five Caterpillar diesel engines and made of the best Cor-ten steel. It will fish with the rest of the company’s clammers off the New Jersey coast. Owner Dick Meyers kept mum until the Pride was almost ready to sail – but now you can join us for a look at one of the biggest and most innovative boats in the fleet.
