Scumbling or woodgraining

Scumbling or woodgraining

All panels are best lightly sanded with a 600 grit emery before assembly to provide a good key for the paint. The structure is coated with acrylic craft paint then the panels are marked out in pencil.  The panels are then filled in with the lighter acrylic craft paint and left for a good 24 hours to harden. I then used a "copper" gel pen to create the graining right up to the panel edges. This dries fairly quickly and by the time you have got right round the structure it should be ok to use the next colour which is called"Popcorn" and is off-white.  This is applied randomly between the copper lines and slightly smudged in the direction of the grain as you go along. The panel edges are next drawn over with a "Black" gel pen.  All gel pens were obtained from the main High Street stationers that are just about everywhere.  The finished work still looks a bit flat but when coated with a satin polyurethane varnish, it really comes into it's own.
