Beautiful models, Will.  Loving them all.  This is a fine website, with all the galleries for individual members.  Very, very enjoyable - and welcome aboard from another recent stowaway!  Donald

Thank you Donald.  It's good to be on board.  You should get at least one new model a year.
    Kind regards

This splendid model of a Fifie lugger is a delight, Will.  These were beautiful boats in their own terms - elegant and powerful, as the 'Reaper', 'Isabella Fortuna' and 'Swan' still remind us.  Is this plank on frame?  Your figures set it off to perfection, giving a fine sense of scale.  I can almost smell the Archangel tar....Superb work.   :crazy2:   Donald

Hi Donald, Yes she's plank on frame.  Frames are made from ply but I can't remember what the planks are.  Apparently at 83ft long, she was the largest sailing Fifie ever built. I built the model to 1:48th scale as a commission for the Broughty Ferry RNLI cox'n.  Apparently she was skippered by (I think) by his grandfather.  She was never motorised and I believe she was broken up in the 1930's.
    Hi Will(and welcome)
Is that the bowsprit lying on deck, how long was it and how much stuck out the front.
    Regards

Hi Davy.  Yes that is the bowsprit on deck. Trying to remember the actual size. I think it was approximately a scale 52ft long and when in use extended a scale 32ft beyond the bow. I was limited for available space in the glass case and so I had to show it stowed. The sail is lying folded for'ard on starboard next to the Main'. She is the smallest scale boat that I have built being in 1/48th scale. If she was in my preferred scale of 1/24th, she would be almost 3ft 6" long and nearly as high.  I don't know what the ballast would be on her but the Reaper (I think) is 73ft long and she carries 23tons of masonry ballast. The weight of the two masts, main - 2.5 tons and mizzen - 1.5tons would play a big part in calculating the necessary ballast.
Aye Will it must have been quite impressive with all sails set at 115 feet overall.
Seen the Reapers' masts lying on the pier, they are pretty big. The masts on your one would have been even bigger wouldn't they?
