Fishing-boats at Annalong

Fishing-boats at Annalong

This watercolour was produced by 'combined operations'!  I drew the scene from a postcard, and my daughter Anna (now a doctor) painted it.  Our joint initials are at the bottom right-hand corner.  This one gives me particular pleasure, as I learned so much from Anna, the real artist in the family, and indeed her developing art talent was very important in salvaging my own interest in the late 1990s, when I was almost swamped by endless institutional bureaucracy.  I picked up the card when Anna was unwell in hospital, and as soon as she began to recover, we set to work on this.  Great therapy for both of us!  Annalong must be very beautiful in reality.  It is certainly special for me.

Well done both of you . Annalong harbour Co Down. The Herd and Mac Kenzie built trawler is possibly the Green Hills owned by the Chambers family.                                                                                                John Baird

Thanks so much, John and Ronnie, for such immediate and fascinating responses, even indentifying the likely trawler!  Wonderful!  Yes, Annalong in Co. Down, the very place.  The Gaelic name is as lovely as the setting - 'Ath na Long' meaning 'Ford of the Ships', 'Shipford'.  I presume it was an important crossing-point at one time, as well as a harbour of some importance?  Are these the Mourne Mountains in the background?  Look forward to seeing it some day soon.   Donald
You make a great team...I love this....has a comical element about it and yet very well drawn....love the figures...and boats look alive like the thomas the tank engines lol....this is fantastic work !!!  Edgar would love this one Donald !!!
What on earth are they doing over in that other place anyway ha ha.....get Edgar over here...I've tried and he's not bitten yet...Donald...go ask him !!!  Bet he'd never leave !  Are we missing the other place ?  ...not me lol !!!

I'm not missing the other place either, Debra.  It seems to have gone completely AWOL.  TPics is excellent. It is just great to see other people's galleries, and go through a range of images by the same artist.  I learn so much, and there is so much fun around the site.

Glad you like this one.  Yes, there is an element of the 'young at heart' here, quite deliberately, with that Thomas the Tank feel, though the boats are still identifiable.  The observers who lead us into the picture are not adult fishermen, but young boys, and this is their take on Annalong - a dream harbour, not unlike my dream puffer on the shore.  That sort of thing. I am sitting there with them, drinking it all in.  I loved doing this pic - will always remember the good fun, as the two of us had (have?) different views about art, as always, but we agree in quite a lot! :crazy2:    :crazy2:

I must talk to Edgar and see if we can get him along to TPics.  An 'Edgar Gallery'.  Now there's a thought.    I think the TPics crew would be absolutely overjoyed and amazed at his work, as we have been.

Great move to TPics - really appreciate it, and my thanks for telling me about it and giving me the necessary push.  You can see that I've pulled out a lot of stuff that was not available elsewhere, so to speak.  The moths have got a big fright. Donald

PS My wife reminded me a wee while ago that the 'disagreement' was about the extent to which the boys' view was to be the one that shaped the picture!  In other words, I was going for something much more technically correct at the outset.  Typical!  Daughter won.  D.

I am absolutely delighted to know that, Samuel!  Thank you very, very, very much for letting me know.  The original postcard was so wonderful that we had to produce a painted version!  The Wilson boys (as I now know who they were) gave it a very special touch, and brought everything to life.  I am so glad - and relieved - that the scene can still be identified, including the boat and the boys!  Wonderful!  That has made my weekend!  All the very, very best, Donald.  O0 O0 O0 O0

How moving and splendid to be in touch with the son of one of the boys in the picture!  That makes the painting SO special - or specially special, as it is special already!  I am so pleased to be in touch, 'Icy'!  It was such a pleasure to draw and paint that picture.  My daughter Anna was responsible for painting the boys - she even re-drew them to get them 'right', as my effort wasn't good enough by her standards!  Many, many thanks indeed for making contact, 'Icy'.  Hope we meet some day.  I really must see Annalong for myself.  You are right about the age of the photograph - the shop in Stirling specialised in old cards.  I am sure I have kept it safe - and I will look it out.  All the very, very best, Donald  O0 O0 O0
