CLAYMORE - the last year in Scotland

CLAYMORE - the last year in Scotland

The year 1976 was rather sad for me, as I lost two of my best maritime friends to other countries - the 'Claymore' to Greece, and the lovely cargo-ship, 'Loch Carron', to other overseas buyers.  I produced some  ink sketches of both ships in that year.  This is one of the 'Claymore', in which I imagined how she might look when viewed from a low angle off the starboard bow.  In Greece the 'Claymore' became the 'City of Hydra', and survived until 2000, when she sank at her moorings in the ships' graveyard near Piraeus....sob.   I hope to paint her as the 'City of Hydra' - that will be an interesting emotional experience for me!  She looked so glamorous and 'unreal' in her Greek guise - I just can't think of her as the 'Claymore' in those years.

Your drawings are excellent Donald !!!

I ought to have been a Naval Architect, Debra, and that was my original intention...but I was discouraged by the employment experts at school and university as the Clyde yards were in decline by the late 1960s, and only a few students were doing NA.   I would have enjoyed Naval Architecture immensely. Looking back, I rather regret I didn't do it   :crazy2:   :crazy2: ....Ah well....never mind...great that I can have a go now at something like it, even if its kinda late in the day!   Thank you so much for your support and warm encouragement.   Donald
