LORD OF THE ISLES dashing out of Coll

LORD OF THE ISLES dashing out of Coll

This is a very well-known member of the CalMac fleet, built in 1989 by Ferguson's, Port Glasgow. She has served on all the main CalMac routes, and has been a most reliable, flexible vessel.  This painting was produced to commemorate her 21st birthday!  I well remember the arrival of the 'LOTI', as she is known, and how strange she seemed initially.  Now she has become 'one of our own'.  I wondered if I could possibly paint a car-ferry in oils, what with the challenges of the enormous 'green-house' (=bridge!), Fast Rescue Craft, side-ramps etc. - to say nothing of the conspicuous and distinctive branding on the sides!  Here I envisage her swinging out of Arinagour, and heading west (inevitably!) to Tiree.  Not as elegant as the old ships - but very, very useful and important to the islands, nevertheless.

Thank you very much for your comments, Kevin and Debra.  I am amazed at the rating given to this effort!  This was something of an experiment, just to see if a modern car-ferry could be 'translated' into contemporary art!  It is on a small board - 14x10 inches.  I did not want to risk spoiling a big board, if things went badly wrong!  The ship could be doing with a larger context to set it off properly. I could do better.... :crazy2: I see very few paintings of present-day car-ferries - which suggests that their angularities, technical complexities and brandings do not appeal to artists.  Well, as I am a 'splasher' with very unpredictable tastes and brushes, anything can appear on my board...even the 'Lord of the Isles', though I confess that I am quite fond of her! A fine wee ship.  Yes, it's great to have the gallery, Debra.  My thanks to you and to TPics once again.  I'd never have thought that my 'splashings' would be worth viewing in this way.     :crazy2:  Donald
