Steamship in a Storm

Steamship in a Storm

Back in the good old days, before Global Warming was comprehended (I've got to be neutral here in case I get an unannounced visit), we Hebrideans lived with GW all the time - Gale Warning.  Of course, as hardy folk, we welcomed the tail-ends of Atlantic hurricanes.  We accepted them gladly as Nature's cleansing department vehicles.  They gave us a really good clear-out - old pig-houses, complete with pigs, flew into the air, never to be seen again, Tiree roofs were mysteriously delivered at back doors in Coll, and cows and sheep had to be tied down, in case they should be deposited unannounced at Corson's Auction Mart in Oban, and fall into the hands of unscrupulous drovers.  It was an exhilarating experience.  Aye, and the ships - they loved it all too.  No Sat Nav then, no radar, no enclosed bridge (just the 'all-weather bridge'), no stabilisers, no pampering.  Here is the old 'Dunara Castle' (built in 1875 for Martin Orme), battling a Storm 10 north-westerly as she comes into Gunna Sound from Barra.  She was, like the rest of them in the good old days, a tough old girl - 'maid of iron'.  She survived the GWs until 1948, when she was eventually taken (struggling) to the breaker's yard.  By Chove, eh?  Tough....aye, you can say that again.

That wave's maybe not just as big as one of Debra's waves Donald, but it's a good one nevertheless! Bonny painting again, with a very interesting (and very amusing!) wee commentary to go along with it.Keep them coming.

Thanks so much, Debra, for your wonderful support and good fun!  I'll give you a big wave (!!) anytime!  Glad you enjoyed it too, Ronnie.  I felt I was exaggerating that sea just a little, getting carried away by the wind - so I thought a wee tongue-in-cheek commentary would be appreciated!  :crazy2:   Can't take myself too seriously all the time.  I quite agree that Debra's waves are 'chust sublime' - much bigger than mine, but she is dealing with the Pentland Firth, and not Gunna Sound!  I suspect the latter was a slice of cake compared with the waves from Stroma eastwards with the current and a westerly gale....I used to see the 'Lochearn' and the 'Claymore' battling it out in terrible waves in the northern entrance to Gunna Sound, with these north-westerlies making steering difficult.  I'm sure more of my 'splashings' will appear!  All the very best and many thanks again, Donald.
