Back in the good old days, before Global Warming was comprehended (I've got to be neutral here in case I get an unannounced visit), we Hebrideans lived with GW all the time - Gale Warning. Of course, as hardy folk, we welcomed the tail-ends of Atlantic hurricanes. We accepted them gladly as Nature's cleansing department vehicles. They gave us a really good clear-out - old pig-houses, complete with pigs, flew into the air, never to be seen again, Tiree roofs were mysteriously delivered at back doors in Coll, and cows and sheep had to be tied down, in case they should be deposited unannounced at Corson's Auction Mart in Oban, and fall into the hands of unscrupulous drovers. It was an exhilarating experience. Aye, and the ships - they loved it all too. No Sat Nav then, no radar, no enclosed bridge (just the 'all-weather bridge'), no stabilisers, no pampering. Here is the old 'Dunara Castle' (built in 1875 for Martin Orme), battling a Storm 10 north-westerly as she comes into Gunna Sound from Barra. She was, like the rest of them in the good old days, a tough old girl - 'maid of iron'. She survived the GWs until 1948, when she was eventually taken (struggling) to the breaker's yard. By Chove, eh? Tough....aye, you can say that again.
MY FAVOURATE PAINTING Donald...love it !!!
