Steve tell us more about the Hailing Station?
The wooden timbers are all that is left of the walkway that used to go to the Lloyds Hailing Station, which itself was no more than a wooden shed. Built in 1899 on what was then called the Northern Wave Trap it lasted right up until 1969.
The Hailing Station was one of many that Lloyds had set up all over the World to track Ships, remember that this was in the days before modern day electronic communications. Lloyds then published lists of movements on a weekly basis. The idea was that the employee of Lloyds would hail the passing Ship and ask where they had been and were going, this would then be recorded and correlated on a national basis.
