Coble given makeover in time for spring visitors

    Northern Echo, Feb 14, 2009

A FISHING coble has been given a makeover to return it to its former glory.

The Three Brothers Grant, at Hartlepool Maritime Experience, has been restored by technician Ian Cruickshank and quay assistant Stuart Hanrahan.

Its paintwork was sanded off, the woodwork repaired and new coats of paint applied.

David Worthington, Hartlepool Borough Council's museums and heritage manager, said: "The coble is one of the museum's best- loved exhibits, especially among children who like to climb aboard and imagine they are sailing into the sunset.

"As a result, she has been looking rather tired of late, but thanks to Ian and Stuart, she is now shipshape again and I am sure will continue to captivate young explorers for many years to come."

Made in 1921, the 30ft coble has worked from Amble, in Northumberland, Sunderland and South Shields, in South Tyneside.

It was donated to the museum in 1982.
