Riley row off – but Angels line up Scottish adventure

A MAMMOTH row on Wednesday from Whitby to Scarborough in the town's historic William Riley Lifeboat had to be pulled due to the poor weather.

A team of eight rowers from Whitby Fishermen’s Rowing Club was due to row 17 miles along the coast to Scarborough in aid of the RNLI.

The 100-year-old former lifeboat was due to arrive in Scarborough for the town’s lifeboat weekend which takes place this weekend.

But instead organiser Pete Thomson, who was due to be coxswain on the four-and-a-half hour trip, had to take the boat to Scarborough on a trailer instead.

The row was to help with training for the Fishermen’s crew which aims to row the William Riley in the Great River Race on the 22-mile Thames Rowing Marathon next year to raise funds for the RNLI and the Whitby Historic Lifeboat Trust which restored the vessel.

Tomorrow, subject to the weather, Scarborough’s lifeboat crew will be joined by Scarborough Amateur Rowing Club and Scarborough Sub Aqua Club volunteers to raise cash for the two clubs and Scarborough RNLI.

They are due to arrive in Whitby at around 6pm tomorrow when the RNLI and a crowd of well-wishers are expected to welcome them through the harbour.

But the William Riley’s adventures don’t stop here.

Drinking buddies The Ales Angels, including Graham Chaddock from Ruswarp who took part in an epic row from South Shields to Whitby last July, are to row the William Riley in Scotland.

The gang, who are all drinking buddies from the Blue Bell in York, will row her 60 miles from Fort William to Inverness taking in Loch Ness, setting off on Monday 10 August and completing the journey on Thursday 13 August.

They will be helped by four crew from each of the three lifeboat stations along the way – Mallaig, Drumnadrochit and Kessock.

Mr Thomson, who will be coxswain during the row in Scotland, told the Gazette: “This is what we have restored the William Riley for to raise money for the RNLI.

“We are just glad it has taken off as it has and are getting so much work with it. It’s a nightmare with health and safety and risk assessments but if we can pull it all off it’s a great thing.

“It will be fantastic for the crew and will hopefully raise a lot of money.”
