Margaret Ann II Freshly Painted Showing Her Perfect Lines

Margaret Ann II Freshly Painted Showing Her Perfect Lines

Summer Painting on the wee slip in Malling.  This picture really captures the craftsmenship of the Weatherhead team.  Her lines are as good as I have seen.

Fantastic shape, struggle to get any boat to look that good nowadays, particularly in wood.

Please   Please  Please.... Never ever let that beautiful boat be destroyed, and the same to the SILVER DAWN, they must be protected in some way for future generations to see and apreciate, not just for their obvious beauty, but as remnants of the halcion days of the ring net fishing at Mallaig and the west coast, now long gone... ???
she looks great with the original weelhouse and varnish rails looks much better light blue i have to say.
Just perfection I notice she's got no stern gear was she getting new gear fitted or re-engined.  Great sea boats the weatherhead boats
had Christina rolling to the deck yesterday nice smooth movement not throwing everyone about.

It's easy to say these ringers shouldn't be cut up, and they should be preserved but most of them are 40 + year old and it takes a lot of time and money to keep them good!...You should spend a few hours down the focsole punching through a gale and see if it changes your opinion!..

Ay  OB 198, there is just some things that I have no answer to, but in 33 years at sea, and still going sometimes in my own creel boat, I was never at sea in a ringer, but have been in a boat far the accomidation was weel forit, and of course its far more comfortable aft. The sad thing is, just as you say, all boats as they get older need maintainance and repairs and if you can even get a carpenter, the cost jist floors you completly. I was recently up west to Sky on a short visit and I spoke to a man who said he was thinking of getting an old wooden boat to restore and preserve, but even if he could get the boat , he said he had made inquiries to get carpentry work done , and could not get anybody interested. The thing about these old wooden boats is that they must be worked to pay their way, and thats very difficult, even for a newer boat at the present time. When an old boat is laid up in a harbour or canal where it is usually flat calm, the planks above the waterline never get properly wet, so that the first time that the boat goes out in any motion, they leak very badly,or worse sink. When I was on my way back from Sky, just at the mainland end of the bridge, I saw the JOHAN lying at anchor in an open stretch of water where she would at least get a roll in the motion. Hopefully shes ok after that severe gales last week. ???
Well when this one stops fishing it would be ideal if she went to someone keen on restoring her, it's not viable now to spend three weeks in the summer drying them out and taking them back to the wood, and that's really what they need. I noticed a photo of a couple of boats in Tarbert that had been done up quite nice....But you see so many that have been bought with that intention and left to fill with water or lie against a pier and get used as a floating fender.
OB198 if someone wants to gift this one to me when she finishes fishing WestBob and I will look after the old lady.  Your right Christina II sat for 7 yrs and went from great condition to very poor, but we've brought her back.  If you've got the skills yourself to do all repairs its not too costly but I agree if you have to pay someone to work on them it costs the earth.  We're just fortunate to have been brought up in a family who have the wood working skills and the engineering skills to do most things.  So if anyones looking for a good home for a 56ft ringer send her my way.  Christina like Shemaron is used almost every week its amazing the difference that makes keeping the hull wet like you said, get water splashing about her upper planks and deck helps stop rot from fresh water.

    Cheers BigAlan  ???
