Boat rescue drama
Gazette edition: Friday, April 2, 1982
HUNDREDS of people lined the walls of a north Northumberland harbour to watch an RAF helicopter winch four crew members to safety from the deck of a stricken fishing boat on Monday, March 29, 1982.
The rescue drama happened after the Amble seine netter Shalemar ran aground on rocks just south of the entrance to the town's harbour.
The Shalemar had been out fishing when she fouled her screw on her own nets and had to be towed back into port by another local fishing boat Coquet Vale. The towline parted and Shalemar was swept onto the rocks.
Amble lifeboat and a Sea King search and rescue helicopter from RAF Boulmer were alerted.
Four crew members were winched off the boat, Shalemar's skipper, Shaun Robinson, his brother Michael Robinson, David Armstrong and Kevin Rollo all from Amble.
The crew managed to save most of the electronic equipment from the boat.
The captain of the RAF helicopter, Flt Lt John Streeter, said every attempt had been made to get the boat off the rocks. "The lifeboat crew tried everything but eventually everyone had run out of ideas," he told the Gazette.
The helicopter crew were on a routine exercise when they received the distress call and within 15 minutes had winched the four crew members to safety.
